nut graf

A nut graf is usually the second paragraph of a news story. The word comes from the phrase "in a nutshell". It means that the paragraph is supposed to sum up and give the important facts of the news story. If the story is written in news style, then the nut graf will be at the beginning of the story, known as the lead. It should address the who, what, when, where, and why of the story.

It is important to not give everything away in the nut graf.  It should not give away the ending of the story or any information that should be revealed later. Instead, the paragraph should address the early on questions that the reader might have. This is a good place to put in a hook and get the reader interested in the story.
